Hello… My name is Brian Neff, and am the founder of Retirement Hustle.
I truly believe that anyone can build a successful business from their side hustle, while ALSO achieving the financial freedom they dream of.
I cannot remember a time in my life that I wasn’t hustling. From mowing lawns, restoring and flipping cars, to flea markets, swap meets, and garage sales, I have done it. From Ebay and Craigslist, to Amazon and Digital Marketing.
What got me to where I am today, started in the late 1990’s. I was working in a plating shop (think Chrome plating), from 3am to 1pm, Monday thru Thursday. I had my afternoons, evenings, and weekends to concentrate on my side-hustles, while raising our family.
Enter Day-trading and the Internet boom of the 90’s…
The timing couldn’t have been more perfect. The stock market was hitting new highs daily, and everything you touched made money. I was trading stocks and options, and loving it.
So much so, that I started studying to become a stock broker.
Here’s is where I learned my first lesson in business:
Never begin a business relationship on a bait and switch tactic.
Everyone around me knew I was day trading, so of course I am going to get invited to an “Investment Seminar.” And of course, I went because I wanted to learn more.
Little did I know, it was a recruiting seminar for a MLM (multi-level marketing) Insurance company. They hooked me in with the promise of getting my investment license on a part-time basis. Nobody else was doing this, so I joined. Then came the kicker, I couldn’t take my investment class, without getting my Life Insurance license first!
What? I had no intentions of ever selling Life Insurance!
June of 1999, I officially became a stock broker. And in a short few years, I had learned enough to get away from captive companies like this, and started my own firm. Folks, my side hustling, fun day trading, is now a full-fledged Fee-Only Investment advisory firm. Not only did I open this firm, I opened an Insurance agency with my wife, Tammy, and my daughter. (since I was already licensed!)
Having our own business was great, but then came the next lesson…
