Why I started Retirement Hustle?

Hello… My name is Brian Neff, and am the founder of Retirement Hustle.

I truly believe that anyone can build a successful business from their side hustle, while ALSO achieving the financial freedom they dream of.

I cannot remember a time in my life that I wasn’t hustling. From mowing lawns, restoring and flipping cars, to flea markets, swap meets, and garage sales, I have done it. From Ebay and Craigslist, to Amazon and Digital Marketing.

What got me to where I am today, started in the late 1990’s. I was working in a plating shop (think Chrome plating), from 3am to 1pm, Monday thru Thursday. I had my afternoons, evenings, and weekends to concentrate on my side-hustles, while raising our family.

Enter Day-trading and the Internet boom of the 90’s

The timing couldn’t have been more perfect. The stock market was hitting new highs daily, and everything you touched made money. I was trading stocks and options, and loving it.

So much so, that I started studying to become a stock broker.

Here’s is where I learned my first lesson in business:

Never begin a business relationship on a bait and switch tactic.

Everyone around me knew I was day trading, so of course I am going to get invited to an “Investment Seminar.” And of course, I went because I wanted to learn more.

Little did I know, it was a recruiting seminar for a MLM (multi-level marketing) Insurance company. They hooked me in with the promise of getting my investment license on a part-time basis. Nobody else was doing this, so I joined. Then came the kicker, I couldn’t take my investment class, without getting my Life Insurance license first!

What? I had no intentions of ever selling Life Insurance!

June of 1999, I officially became a stock broker. And in a short few years, I had learned enough to get away from captive companies like this, and started my own firm. Folks, my side hustling, fun day trading, is now a full-fledged Fee-Only Investment advisory firm. Not only did I open this firm, I opened an Insurance agency with my wife, Tammy, and my daughter. (since I was already licensed!)

Having our own business was great, but then came the next lesson…

Your business success is in direct correlation to the amount of value you can deliver to your customer...

Deliver Value in Investing and Insurance? How do you do that?

Folks, it wasn’t about the products. Everyone had similar products…

The value was in the relationship.

For people to love you and trust you today, they must first know that you care. That you listen!!!

This is where Marketing came into my business life. I had to figure out how to attract new customers, without the traditional “selling” of products.

I HATE selling anything! But, I fell in love with Marketing.

Digital Marketing to be exact…

The next few years I couldn’t get enough of marketing events, courses, etc…

I became a sponge for information. And, in 2016, I received my Digital Marketing Certified Professional designation.

And here we are today…

With over two decades of helping clients save and invest for retirement, I have found the next problem that Americans will face.

I call it the Retirement Savings Crisis.

You may have seen many studies in the news recently. It is a serious problem. And, it is one where we must do our best to fix this.

Look at these stats from a recent Bankrate study:

  • More than 1 in 5 working Americans aren’t saving any money for retirement, emergencies or other financial goals
  • More than 4 in 10 households (45 percent) earning less than $30,000 per year aren’t saving any money
  • 38 percent of working Americans have too many expenses to save

“Low-income Americans living paycheck to paycheck may realistically have nothing to save. For these families, finding ways to earn extra money may be more effective.”

For many, a side hustle is the only way they may reach a secure retirement.

By 2020, 40% of working Americans will be side-hustling for a financial reason.

Side hustles will put you in control of your financial future, if you commit to it for the long haul. Commitment is the first step…

Let’s do this together…

To your success,

Brian Neff
